Why a Miniature Aussie?
I wanted a barn buddy and travel companion. With the horses a herd bred dog was first to mind but size was an issue. I always liked the Aussies and loved the idea of color options with spots so when I found they came smaller there was no going back. I started with a Valhalla bred female Cascade Colors Lacey Blue and like the saying goes "You can't have just one". Lacey was such a joy. The ease of traveling with her and the sharp thinking, outgoing mind made her the perfect family addition. So I added to the family another Valhalla bred Aussie Valhalla's Midnight Bandit (name pending) and I was excited to add the cross of Davis, Karsner's, Whoop N Holler and more to our Valhalla lines with the arrival of our April 6, 2008 litter.
Cascade Colors Miniature Aussies are raised in the home and on the go. They are raised alongside our American Saddlebred Pintos attending to chores, yard work, hauling hay, visiting the vet and all the other daily dutys of the country life. They learn to travel and are socialized to ensure well rounded happy individuals.
What is the Miniature Australian Shepherd?
The Miniature Australian Shepherd was started as a breed in 1968 from a group of small select Australian Shepherds. The size and conformation was achieved over 10 years of breeding, crossing the smallest standard sized Australian Shepherds. Scarce themselves, smaller Aussies were sought out and used in the breeding program.
Valhalla Aussies
In 1981, the original breeding began with a standard bitch by the name of Valhalla's Cookie. Cookie was bred to Cordova's Spike, the first registered Miniature Australian Shepherd. This was the beginning of "Valhalla-aussies."
Through the years the upper most goal of Valhalla-Aussies has been trying to enlarge the gene pool by infusing standard dogs. Raising Quality Dogs has always been the focus! Valhalla bred dogs are the foundation for many of the top show kennels in the country.
About the Miniature Austrailian Shepherds
The ideal miniature Aussie is the mirror-image of the “Standard Australian”, only in a smaller package. Size ranges from 13” to 18” tall, measured at the top of the withers. They are in the Herding group, Breed and Obedience ring, as well as in the home as a supremely devoted companion and pet.
The Miniature Australian Shepherd has all the attributes of the larger Aussie but the advantages of a smaller dog, weighing between 15 to 35 pounds at maturity. They come in coat colors of blue merle, red merle, black or red tri or hi, all with or without copper/tan and white trim. Their eyes may be blue, brown, hazel (amber), one blue and one brown, flecked or marbled. Tails are sometimes naturally bobbed, while longer ones are docked.
The Miniature Aussie's temperament is that of the larger Aussies: sensitive, easily trained, excellent natural guardians of the home and possessing strong herding instincts. They are calm and confident, but suspicious of strangers. They are entirely devoted to their masters and will go to great lengths to please. Their unique size makes them perfectly suited to our growing urbanization, as well as making fine traveling companions.
